Rise Above Overwhelm
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30
Hello Friend! I wanted to talk to you today on the topic of overwhelm. Life can be SO overwhelming!
What is overwhelming you right now? ...... (stop and think)
I recently learned that the root cause of overwhelm is fear. It is our fear that makes us feel overwhelmed. Fears like ....there is not enough time, there is not enough money, I am not enough, I am going to miss out, I am going to mess up, or this is all too much. How will it work out?
These fears drive us to overwhelm. Can you relate?
I want to motivate you with four steps to help you rise above overwhelm!
1. Step One – Take a step back and breath! When you feel yourself feeling overwhelmed, become aware of it and step back. Tell your nervous system you are ok by breathing deep. Close your eyes, put a smile on your face and tell your body you are ok. Give Heaven your warmest smile! "Look at him; give him your warmest smile. Never hide your feelings from him." PSALM 34:5
2. Step Two – Pinpoint your overwhelm. Ask yourself what is making you FEEL overwhelmed at this moment, and what is ONE thing you can do right now to take a step in the right direction and make progress. Write this down.
3. Step Three – Remember your resources! You are not alone! You have the Lord Jesus Christ with you, within you, for you, before you, and always! You are also created in the image of God and purposed for such a time as this. Outside of these amazing resources, count the other resources you have … family, friends, books, the internet, coworkers, teammates. "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
4. Step Four – Focus on where you can make an impact. Schedule it! Stop focusing on people and situations you have no control over. The truth is we can’t control anyone but ourselves. Build yourself up with the truth of who you are in the image of Christ.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:10
